Interview With Former Governor Of Jhelom Lady Willow Smythe

September 05, 2013 By: Lady Mal Category: Atlantic News

Last night I met with Lady Willow Smythe, the previous governor of Jhelom. She is currently running for the next term of office and was kind enough to take time from her busy schedule to allow an interview.

willowinterview1

Lord William Castle provided a gate to his home, where the interview would take place. In a few moments, we were joined by Lady Smythe.

“ Greetings,” she said, extending her hand.

“ Good evening, Lady Smythe.” After our handshake we took our seats at a shadowstone table. “Well, firstly, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to let me interview you.”

“ Of course,” she nodded, “ Did you interview the candidates last term?”

“ No, I did not.” The former governor smiled.

“ Oh good. I didn’t slight or snub.”

“ I do plan to try to interview everyone that served last term.”

“ So what would you like to know?” She asked.

“ Lady Willow, I’d like to start with some personal questions and then move into the meaty stuff the public wants to know. Is this alright?” I took out my paper and pen.

“ Very good,” she nodded.

willowinterview2

“ Where were you born? Are you native to Jhelom?”

“ Nay, not a native. I was born in Caina, just after the order of Oblivion left it to ruin or very shortly before. On the chaos shrine.”

“ That’s quite an interesting and unique birthplace. Would you say that it influenced who you are?”

“ I would say it made an impact, aye. It gave me a first hand view of what is left behind. Particularly, with the Order Of The Ebon Skull.”

“ Oh?” I wrote quickly to keep up as she continued.

“ It is no secret that I oppose the cult.”

“ You’ve been particularly vocal about Oblivion at the Council meeting,” I recalled from a gathering I had attended. She nodded as I continued with my next question.

“ I understand Jhelom has a warrior academy, what can students expect from registering for a school year?”

“ I’d have to say it depends on the aptitude of the student. Naturally, survival skills as well as resistance testing.”

“ What do you mean by resistance testing?” I asked.

“Training them to withstand dramatic enviroment changes. For instance… having the studends stand in the icy, snowy hills where ladies of the snow dwell with little more than their amor coverings. Whilst still needing to defend themselves from the wicked snow wraiths,” she smirked. Having been there recently myself, I contained a shudder and continued.

“ It sounds very thorough. What rates do you charge?”

“ I won’t deny a student training for fees. Just while they are a student, they pull their weight with in the town and protect it if need by while they occupy it.”

“ Is it true that you started training warriors at a very young age, nearly a child, yourself?” I asked.

“ Aye. At the age of twelve. Shortly after I was inducted into the Umbran military myself. Umbra had a bit of a life spike, if you will.”

“ Obviously, it has influenced you today,” she nodded and I continued. “Jhelom’s home Virtue is Valor, does your academy incorporate any of the other Virtues into daily life?”

“ I educate the students on all the Virtues and what they entail. Though, we do not follow the Virtues, I won’t have my students or soliders being ignorant toward them,”

“ Is this what made you choose Jhelom as a base of operation?”

“ I chose Jhelom for it’s history and simplicity,” she replied, “It’s a warrior’s town, nothing more, nothing less. Anything a warrior TRULY needs, can be found with in the city limits.”

“ Very practical. Jhelom is also home to the Knights Of The Crux Ansata.” She nodded. “Tell me, does this influence your warrior academy in any way, or are the two completely unassociated?”

“ Unassociated, really.” I nodded and moved on to my next topic without pressing further.

“ How has your academy evolved since its founding?”

“ Indeed. This program if you will, started back in Umbra. It has still continued to evolve since even starting it in Jhelom.”

“ Obviously, it has seen great success to thrive so long.”

“ I never knew how much I enjoyed fighting and combat until I started teaching and demonstrating to others,” she grinned.

“ They say that there is joy in teaching, and even additional learning,” I said.

“ I’d have to agree with that.”

“ Lady Willow, I’d like you to walk me through an average day in the life of a student of your academy.”

“ It would start with the resistance training. Which the pools of each element increase with intensity over time. Then.. the lesson begins, be it escaping a kidnapping, learning of the Grimmswind brothers, Virtues….Oblivion,” I nodded and scribbled as she continued, “ Again, we may not follow those aspects of life but I won’t have my students be unknowing of them, either.”

“ Knowledge is power. As a governor, what did you find to be your biggest challenge?” I asked.

“ Balance,”she chuckled, “ Historically not my best trait.”

“ The balance between both responsibilities?”

“ Aye.. not to mention the other towns as well. Naturally I am biased to my own town… but I have to remember to not be over bearing.”

“ Speaking of the other towns.. In previous months, most of the governors have openly stated their grievances about the governor of Britain, Solus. What do you think of him?”

“ Well, I’ve had the nerve to tell him in person with out the public to back me up. Or the king. I find that he’s an interesting specimen that can’t quite get his story straight. Given that one moment he’s demanding that all the other towns send their best men, ONLY men and then the next stating that he’s suited to over see yet another town such as Moonglow. Now I ask you, why ask for help and then say you are capable of another city’s well-being?”

“ Personally, I find the man lacking upstairs,’ I agreed.

“ I think, he just likes to be heard….” she grinned. “ no action.. Again, I’ve told him this personally. I’ve also offered to train some of his own men and women and children. He said he would send them my way and alas, no one from Britain has come. So my sympathy wanes.”

“ What do you think of your opponent this term, Alexander, I believe his name is?”

“ He was my opponent last term as well. I’ve never seen the man!,” I couldn’t resist a small laugh with her as she continued. “ One thing needs to be said though… Even if Alexander wins over me… Jhelom is still mine, just as it was before. I’ll still see to that it gets everything it needs. The title goes away, but not the responsibility. Regardless of how hard that might be.”

“ That is very noble of you. Do you find King Blackthorn to be a fit man to serve?”

“ Aye, I do. I was elated when he returned to the throne. I saw an oppertunity for movement and change.”

“ Aye, I think many of us did,” I smiled.

“ He thinks outside of the box.”

“ How would Jhelom contribute to the well-being of Britannia, if you are elected this term?”

“ Well, for starters I am planning on opening up the Academy. I’ve often said that I’ve found other guards’ training lacking. So, if you want something done right… you’ve got to do it yourself, aye?”

“ I am a firm believer of that. There have been issues with pirates in previous days, what do you plan to do to resolve such horrid issues?”

“ Fighting them doesn’t make them dissipate or disband. So, I’m going to try a parle with them. Set up a deal that if they do not ravage my borderlands. We will offer them goods and repairs should the need arise.”

“ Other than the pirates, does Jhelom have any other immediate threats that you might ask the King to aid with?”

“ None that I haven’t already asked aid for. We’re never going to stop fighting Oblivion. That’s not just Jhelom’s problem but all of ours.”

“ That seems to have been a problem in recent months.”

“ But I am happy to fight it alone, same as with a thousand troops. They are dormant now, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them as the lands cool off and we enter the cold of winter.”

“ What do you plan on changing if you are elected this upcoming term that is different from your last as governor?”

“ It is hard to say as what we hold dear in our town is not valued the same as others. I just want to continue to be the best voice the city deserves.”

“ Do you plan on hosting events within your city this term?”

“ Aye… This coming Thursday there is to be a joust. I’d also love to hold a tournament of champions. Nothing planned as of yet but ideas of course.”

“ That sounds fitting for the nature of the city.”

“ One of these days too, I will find time to construct my hedgemaze as well,” she nodded.

“ What improvements would you like to see in Jhelom?”

“ Improvements, I’d still like to see a resting place for our steeds with in the town.”

“ Is there not a stable on the north isle?” I was surprised, for I’d figured stables were a common practise.

“ There are pens for them to roam free, aye, but nowhere to actually rest or eat, persay.”

“ I see how that can be a hassle. Lady Smythe, what are your plans for the future?”

“ Same as now. As I said before, I just won’t always be the governer. My hope is that even after I am gone, at least one student carries on our way of life. I’m going to continue to better the town and not have people think of it as a “mudhole”, as it is so much more rich and valuable than that.”

“You certainly have become fond of the city from using it for practical reasons.”

“ It does grow on you with its rustic charm.”

“ I’ve taken much of your time this evening, Lady Smythe. Is there anything you’d like to add for our readers at home?”

“ Honestly, if they are still unconvinced, come and see us,” she grinned.

With that, I packed my ink and pen up and gathered my papers. After thanking her again for taking time from her busy schedule, I made my way home knowing that by tomorrow everyone would know a bit more about this dedicated Headmistress of The Jhelom Warrior Academy.

[News] Conseil du Roi – August 25th

September 01, 2013 By: Faeryl Category: Atlantic News

The third and final meeting of the Governors of the Founding Council got underway last Sunday night, despite the absence of Lord Beldin Brightaxe of Minoc, who was represented once again by Lord Zhuge, and Lord Sage of Skara Brae, who was represented by the Lady Lioness Heart.

Lord Blackthorn began by personally thanking the Governors for their service, and encouraging them to run again. He also announced that he could be petitioning the Court Artisans to create portraits of each of the Governors to recognize their service to both him and the realm.

Getting down to business, Lord SunWolf of Yew had nothing new to comment on aside from announcing the next archery tournament, scheduled for the first Tuesday of September.

Lady Khaleesi of Vesper reported that the city had earned proceeds from both their tavern night and their carnival, totaling five million gold. She stated that should she not gain reelection, the gold would be in the fund for the new Governor-Elect. The Governor of Vesper then requested a Protection Act for the White Hart that has recently been spotted roaming near both Vesper and Skara Brae.

“The White Hart, a sacred and holy creature. By my command, King Blackthorn of Britannia, I hereby declare the White Hart under direct ownership of the crown. Any sport hunting or general disruption of the creature is to be considered an act of Treason. Poaching of the White Hart will be punishable by Forfeiture of Titles, Confiscation of Wealth…  And Death.”

The King then called upon Skara Brae. Lady Lioness Heart mentioned that the city had requested trash cans to be placed at the bank to keep the city litter free, and they were hoping to have them put in place if possible. Though it would seem that in the matters of trash collection, the King was unable to help. The Mayor of Skara Brae, Galdor, also wished to present the King with a gift; a manuscript discovered in a far off land that they hoped would be fitting for the King’s library.

Lord Tazar of Moonglow had three topics to address. The first was a recommendation to commemorate the Governors, though the King was already a step head. The second, Lord Tazar claimed must wait, as the timing was not appropriate. The third topic that Governor Tazar wished to bring up was a review of the actions of Lord Solus, the Governor of Britain. Lord Tazar claimed that as Lord Solus has failed in many of his recommendations, that he felt that Britain was too large a city for one Governor to handle, and propose that the city be divided into three parts; North Britain, South Britain and East Britain. King Blackthorn then asked Lord Solus for his response, and the Governor declared that the city has prospered, and become safer. Buildings have been renovated, there were funds outmatching any city, and they boasted the best guard in the lands.

This spurred comments from Lords Tazar and Lew of being accosted by the guards, to which Lord Solus demanded proof and claimed that they were speaking lies, claiming that ‘Britain leads the land in every category… There has been no reason to doubt Britain.’ King Blackthorn then admitted that while we may not agree with the methods used by Lord Solus, Britain has remained both safe and prosperous. While he would seek to dissuade the Governor from being so harsh, he would let the people decide during this coming election.

Next to speak was Lord Lew of Trinsic who had two issues to bring up. First he called forth Trade Minister Soar to speak of Trinsic’s fishing competition:

“Greetings Your Majesty, Ladies and Lords. Earlier this month the Fishing Competition came to conclusion in Trinsic. The city of Trinsic would like to once again extend its congratulations to all winners, and our sincere gratitude to all those who donated resources and time to make it happen. The grand winner was the skilled and seasoned angler, Flair! Governor Lew has the fish for you, sire. A yellowtail of 198 stone. We would like to request the Kings’ permission to continue this event at regular intervals. We were thinking once every four months. … We can take care of the book work and organization, but would be grateful for any support with prizes from our sister cities. All credit for donations will be announced widely of course, it is the very least we can do.”

King Blackthorn congratulated Flair and announced that the winning fish would hang in his study. In regards to continuing the event, King Blackthorn’s only wish was that the area around the castle remains free of overfishing, as he himself enjoyed the sport now and then.

The second item Lord Lew brought up was the request of a few citizens who travel great distances to be at the meetings. Since these distances make it difficult for them to be in attendance on the night the meeting is scheduled, they requested the meeting be moved a day earlier. The King replied that he would consider it and converse with the next council, though Sunday evening has worked wonderfully to this point.

Lady Willow Smythe of Jhelom also had two items to bring up. The first was the mention of a possible Ball in an effort to give back to those that put the Governors in their seats. Secondly, she spoke of how important people’s time is to them, and that it seemed strange to have the Governors call speakers up when they themselves were present. She stated that it wastes the time of both the people and the King. In response, King Blackthorn suggested that it be left to the preference of the Governor whether they wish to address an issue themselves, or call on a petitioner. “It is a fine thing including as many people as possible in the process.”

The next to be called was Lady Andrasta of New Magincia, who began with a speech.

“Good Evening My Liege, Lords  & Ladies, Guests & Citizens, I am happy to report that The City of Magincia has reverted to her peaceful prosperous ways with the ending of the Blockade. As far as I know the Citizens of Magincia have only one complaint… The Treasury sits at less than 10,000 gold pieces because the King’s Tax Collectors still take much gold from the City and there are no new improvements to please the populous. Take heed Great King, continuing to take high taxes from our people without some return on their toil will cause you trouble down the road.”

The King replied that he has a great respect for the city of Magincia, and understood that as Governor, Lady Andrasta’s finances are a concern for the people and their needs. He assured that the fact that the city was rebuilding was not lost on him, and that he had been told in private that his dismissal of her at the last meeting may have been harsh. In response to the needs of the city of Magincia, the King then granted a six month cessation of taxes on New Magincia by 5%.

Lady Andrasta also wished to invite the citizens of the realm to two events. The first was to be the Final Gathering Feast which was held on August 28th at Blackthorn’s Castle. The second event is the annual Goodman’s Rune Library Memorial Service. It will be held on September 2nd at 7:30pm EST on the Magincia Beach.

Next was Lord Zhuge, who was filling in for Lord Beldin. Lord Zhuge announced that there was nothing on the agenda for Minoc, though he wished that there was. In response, Lord Blackthorn encouraged him to stand for election, as he has been attentive to the city of Minoc and refused to let it go unrepresented.

Finally, it was the turn of Lord Solus of Britain. Firstly, the Governor addressed his attire for the evening, claiming it to be symbolic and stating that things cannot always be explained in one sitting. He spoke of what he has accomplished as Governor; ensuring the treasury is always full without needing donations from the citizens, buildings having been renovated, having guards trained to protect them. Then he began to speak of how the entire realm suffered from a plague. One which Lord Solus called humanity. He stated that this plague has wrecked the lands for a long time, and insisting that he made no threats nor that he was speaking for himself, but he claimed that Britain was working to ensure that “we survive to ascend to the future.” Lord Solus claimed the future holds many gifts for us all, to be free from death, illness and crime. He hoped that others would join Britain in attempting to achieve this goal. “The time…will be soon. … But sometimes we must shed the thing we call flesh. Only in time of course.”

King Blackthorn responded by speaking of a book he had once read in the Grand Britannian Repertory Library in Tokuno. It was of a man who started as a lowly citizen and rose to power, but in the process, he lost himself and everything else that could be lost. The King then cautioned Solus for the path he was taking and for the thoughts he was allowing to run through his mind. Lord Solus proceeded to assure the King that he would be fine, and that it would be up to each and every one of us to decide if our ‘ascension’ would be painless or destructive.

After the ramblings of the Governor of Britain were finished, the Crown called upon the Lady Sofia Elias of Nujel’m. He asked if there was anything the Crown could do to for its neighbours. The Lady Sofia politely declined to speak, stating that she could not rightfully speak for the governing body of the island. Allowing Lady Sofia to retake her seat, the King then called forth the goblin Ozog Giantfart of the pitmuck mob. After introducing himself, the goblin announced that he was there to see if the pitmuck might establish an outpost here, but needed to see how tolerant the people would be. The King’s reply was thus:

“Your representation of your race here this evening has been most gracious Master Goblin. As King it is no secret that I respect all races. We are all members of the same world. … I assure you master Goblin that the people of Britannia will welcome your kind with open arms. And many of her cities would welcome the activity you would bring. All I ask is that you maintain an effort to respect our own rules and culture as you do your own.”

The Lady Khaleesi then spoke up, claiming to have neglected an announcement. She stated that the city of Vesper has been in communication with the Emerald Trading Company, and that the next caravan on September 4th would be from Britain to Vesper.

With that, the King thanked everyone for attending the meeting, and speaking to the Governors, he encouraged them to continue their service.

Long Live Britannia!

[News] The Second Conseil du Roi

August 03, 2013 By: Faeryl Category: Atlantic News

The second Conseil du Roi got underway Sunday night with the election of the new Moonglow governor, Lord Tazar, who received all but one nomination. Governor Solus instead wished to annex Moonglow to the city of Britain, claiming that the city could not defend itself, as evidenced by the number of invasions it has been through; though he failed to mention that Britain has also suffered its fair share of invasions.

After Lord Tazar took his seat, the meeting moved on to address any issues or requests the governors or citizens of the realm may have, starting with Britain. Lord Solus announced that the most pressing issue of Britain was the need for more men, and that the other cities needed to lend men to bolster his guard. Despite the fact that the Black Tower was no more, Lord Solus stated that we need to ensure that Britain is kept free of noncitizens.  He then had the nerve to claim that he believed that the people elected him to care for our safety, and while the King watched over the lands, it was too much to ask of him to watch over the cities as well. And when that failed, he tried to ask for donations, such as the other cities best ships to better protect the waters around Britain. King Blackthorn disagreed and told the governor to let the people enjoy their peace, and that there was no need to impress more guardsmen into Britain.

Next the King addressed Lord Lew of Trinsic, who called upon his Trade Minister Soar to give a brief announcement:

“Greetings King Blackthorn, Lords and Ladies. Thank you for allowing me the time to speak. I will try to brief. I would like to announce a competition sponsored by our fine city of Trinsic. It is a fishing competition, in which mariners compete to catch the largest fish over a period of two weeks. The competition has already started as of yesterday morn, and will come to climax in 13 days from now. Lord Lew and several other governors present have donated some amazing prizes. I have been knocked off my feet by the generosity shown, and we are continuing to accept donations for the prizes. Governor Lew is collecting those if anyone wishes to put something forward.”

In response to this announcement, King Blackthorn put up a prize of his own, stating that if there is a fish trophy of the winners catch, he will hang it in his castle.

Then there was a petition from the city of Vesper, presented by a man called Alward. While the full details of the petition weren’t made clear, Alward did state that it had to do with the sharing of Minoc’s moongate, and that a change was required.  King Blackthorn’s response was that whatever it was would be considered.

At this point, rather unexpectedly, King Blackthorn requested that Lady Khaleesi follow him out of the chambers. After several minutes of speculation as to the reason, the King and governor returned and took their seats. The two guards that had escorted them out approached a woman who had been standing need Lady Khaleesi and attempted to remove her from Court under the King’s orders. Both the woman, Niamh, and her husband claimed to have a letter, which was given to one of the guards to be handed to the King. Despite the letter, Niamh was removed, and the meeting went on.

The next governor addressed was Lord SunWolf of Yew.  Lord SunWolf started with an announcement that on August 6th, at 8pm by the eastern sky, there will be an archery contest held. He then called up a citizen to explain an issue involving the expanse of land the city of Yew covers, and the many dirt roads that at times can become confusing to traverse. From this the idea of road signs was proposed, and it appeared to be an idea that the King fully agreed with. Governor SunWolf then took over to explain how the names for the roads could possibly be chosen.

“I would like to work on a street a week or so, and have the citizens help name them. Then work together and pick the right and proper name for the road. It will be a timely process, but I feel it can be done, with everyone’s help and ideas.”

Then it was time for Lord Sage of Skara Brae to take the floor. While Lord Sage had nothing to discuss at the time, he introduced his Mayor, Galdor, who wished to thank the King for the aid he has given the people and express gratitude to the Citizens of the land in the defense of their town against a monster that had attacked the day prior, to which the King responded:

“The people of Britannia can always be relied upon to answer any threat.”

Though his tenure had been quite brief to that point, Lord Tazar of Moonglow was the next to be called upon. His only concern at the time was the pirates of their coastlines. King Blackthorn mentioned an idea that had been brought up previously, concerning Privateers. It was then Raven’s turn to address the council with an issue. After a bit of rambling, Raven finally told the council that some taverns had started watering down their alcohol for fear of running out due to the shortages. The King’s reaction was one of near outrage at this news. “Watered Down Alchohol?! Not in Britannia!” When asked of the cause for the shortages, Raven speculated that the blockade might be the issue.

“Governors, Ladies and Lords… Ill not get involved in this blockade and tariff business right now… However, I will stress that we work through our differences. Healthy competition between cities, spurs economic growth and prosperity. But too much, stifles us all. And I hereby issue this decree. Any bartender caught watering down drinks… Shall be fined 10 gold per glass. Payable to the town treasury. Labels of course should be honest and true. 100 gold fine per bottle mislabeled purposefully.”

The King then addressed Lady Andrasta of New Magincia, giving her the floor to speak. Standing up, Lady Andrasta unfurled a long scroll and began to read.

“Good Evening My Liege, Lords & Ladies, Guests & Citizens. The City of Magincia has fallen on hard times… Tonight it grieves me to formally file an official complaint against a dear friend, Lady Khaleesi who currently serves as the Governor of Vesper. On her orders a fleet of Privateer Ships has blockaded New Magincia ports and strangled our trade with other cities, most illegally I might add.”

She proceeded to remind the King that he had approved the 50% tariff on New Magincia Rum, and claimed that without their trade lines open, the city would suffer greatly.

“As I mentioned during the first meeting my goal is to bring to your attention the plight of the citizens of New Haven whose new arrivals suffer greatly.”

The King attempted to have the two negotiate on a lower tariff. Lady Khaleesi offered 25%, claiming that to be a fair price; however Lady Andrasta was not to be swayed so easily, and only reduced her offer to 40%. During this negotiation, Lady Andrasta was challenged by a citizen in the audience. “And what good is a governor who doesn’t ask her citizens and business owners first?”  To respond to the citizen’s challenge, Lady Andrasta turned her back on the King, evoking his response:

“In light of Lady Andrasta turning her back on the King… I hereby declare her Tarriff lowered to 20%. And the blockade of New Magincia done with. Are we understood?”

Now it was Lady Willow of Jhelom’s turn. She began by addressing a rumour of dreams that she had been plagued with, in which she was to kill his majesty. After that matter was settled, she requested a stable for Jhelom’s battle steeds and other steeds in general.

Finally it was the turn of Minoc. The governor, Lord Beldin, was absent, and as such, Lord Zhuge took his place for the evening. The only request of Minoc was of a possible timeframe for when the construction of their docks to begin. Assuring him that plans and survey were likely underway, the King finally closed the meeting.

“I hereby close this meeting of the Royal Council. Until next month.”

Long Live Britannia!

Long Live The King!
