[Event Fiction] Smoke and Murders

October 19, 2011 By: Lord Gareth Category: Ethereal Void Imperium

By EM Drosselmeyer
[OOC: This fiction has been posted as a ‘reward’ of the fact that the code from the Hidden Identities event was solved.]

Tavalia awoke in a dark, moldy cave. The last thing she could remember was Kendrick’s magic show and him claiming that she wouldn’t be able to believe the next trick. With a groan and a whiff of smoke from her clothes, she had brief glimpses of the moments prior to unconsciousness. Kendrick throwing wide his cloak, strange pockets inside that were too obvious to be part of a magic trick…and then bottles being thrown, fire spreading everywhere, and Morrow leaping at her like a tumbler, hitting her full in the chest and hurling her to the stone ground as her chair broke on impact. Brief glimpses of one of the castles secret passageways as she was dragged away. Only to find herself here…where ever that may be.

She strained to move, but found that her hands were tied behind her, and her ankles tied as well. She felt the tug of a chain hanging from the ceiling of the cave that led to her neck and held her in place but did not choke her. She struggled against the bonds, but to no avail, and her shouts were muffled by a gag held in place around her face. She didn’t have to wait long before a light came from a corner in the back of the cave, and the figure of Morrow in his magician’s outfit came forward. Tavalia could tell something was off…the gait, the stride, everything seemed bizarrely off…but more disconcerting was the gleaming dagger held in the figure’s offhand. With the hat pulled low, Morrow approached Tavalia and set the lantern down beside her. Tavalia gritted her teeth and glared at the figure before a gloved hand reached up to her and pulled the gag out of her mouth. Tavalia immediately screamed, to which the only reaction was a devilish grin from the figure in front of her. When no answer was heard, she stared at the unmoving, unwavering figure before she managed to speak again.

“If you think there’s even a chance that you’ll get away with this after that brazen attempt, or that you’ve anything to gain here by any action other than immediately freeing me and throwing yourself on the mercy of the crown, then yo…” Her diatribe was interrupted by a stinging pain across her cheek that flung her head to one side. Face and eyes burning with shock and shame, Tavalia fixed Morrow with her most intimidating glare. “They’ll be searching for me, and they’re going to find me and the…” Again her head snaps forcefully to the side, her other cheek burning from another slap. The figure in front of her seems to be shaking softly, before raising their chin to look at her, a wide and maniacal grin on their face.

“Oh yes…they’re definitely going to find you.”

“Then you may as well give yours…” Tavalia stops as she’s interrupted by a flash of white across her skull, and a woman’s voice screaming before she realizes it’s her own, and she looks down to see that the figure in front of her has stabbed the dagger through one of her palms. Tavalia fights back the scream and feels tears fall from her eyes as she manages to grit her teeth and bear through the worst of it. Grabbing Tavalia’s hand and slashing the bindings with the dagger, the figure drags it across the hat they’re wearing, and Tavalia jerks her hand back and knocks the hat away, blood staining it’s otherwise pristine surface. Tavalia grabs the chain at her neck but feels two rapid impacts to her chest, knocking the wind from her and causing her to gasp for breath as the strength drains from her limbs. Hanging limply from the chain, she looks up in the low lantern light as the figure draws another pristine dagger to parallel the bloodied one already in it’s hand.

As the figure comes in arm’s reach, Tavalia takes a wild swing at them, feeling her nails dig into the flesh of Morrow’s face and rip it clean off. As she pulls her hand away with a fist full of flesh, she looks in horror to the grinning, sadistic smile revealed underneath the disguise. The eyes revealed beneath the tattered remains of the false visage held no glimpse of remorse or mercy within them. “Virtues preserve…” Without another word the figure moved in a flash, almost before Tavalia could blink, and she hardly even felt the cuts…just something warm and wet as it soaked through her top, vaguely aware of a rapidly spreading sensation of cold throughout her body. She raised a trembling hand up and tried to hold the wound closed, but she already knew it wouldn’t help. As her vision blurred, she struggled to find the strength for one last retort, one last plea, one last hard glare at the still grinning figure in front of her, but she was too tired, and it was all too much. She’d always thought it was supposed to be so much worse…but it felt like slipping into a cold ocean. And then there was blackness.

Reaching down to pick up lantern and hat, the figure put the hat on and pulled it low over their exposed face. They also ripped open Tavalia’s still clenched hand, and removed what was left of the false face that the Ambassador had ripped away. With a look of disgust towards the Ambassador’s remains, the figure left the cave and ascended the rocky outcropping nearby with remarkable deftness and agility before removing a collapsible spyglass from a small pouch on the disguise’s belt. Sighting across the land, they spotted many of the Crown’s forces desperately searching for any sign. Collapsing the spyglass once more, the figure drew forth a scroll and a rune, and chanted the words ‘Kal Ort Por’, and vanished with a brief burst of magic.

[Event Fiction] Borne on Ill Tidings

October 19, 2011 By: Lord Gareth Category: Ethereal Void Imperium

By EM Drosselmeyer
Balandar exhaled heavily as he drew the chair from his desk and collapsed into it in exhaustion. He definitely wasn’t as young as he’d once been, he thought with a rueful smile as he stretched to work the kinks out of his back. He’d still pit himself favorably against any mage around, unless Nystul suddenly showed back up…but all this fighting and army gathering business should be handled by the Guard. Still, he’d not have trusted any of them to have the know how to deactivate the safeguards put in place by Captain Tokinson and the Olmecians, and so he’d ended up going along. He also had to make sure that his spell actually worked…he breathed a sigh of relief that though many were harmed, none were drowned due to his spell wearing off early or being ineffective.

Opening the heavily ensorcelled and locked chest beneath his desk, he drew the artifact crystal out and held it in one hand. It glowed and glittered fiercely, casting off sparks and shimmers almost like it was a fledgling moongate, waiting to be filled with power and activated. As it pulsed in his hand he closed his eyes and let his mana take him into the void and feel the call of the artifacts power. He pondered it’s ability to control the seas, and how it was used by Captain Tokinson. He was certain that the artifact could be coupled, could be attached to other objects like the drive crystals of the HMS Poseidon’s Fury, but he wasn’t sure how far it could be pushed. He wished that he could keep it and study it himself, but with the state of things as they were he doubted he’d be able to retain possession of it for long before it was requested to be sealed away within the Royal Guard Vault. As his mind floated in the void thoughts of possible applications and uses of the power of an artifact of this kind flowed and melded into fully fle…Balandar snapped alert with a start as he noticed something.

The artifact in his hand had been pulsing with power, immensely strongly, even in a passive state, but he had just felt something different; a similar pulse of power…but one that was different in it’s essence, a different type of mana. And once he’d felt that one, he realized there were two others, even weaker, just barely background noise. It couldn’t be…Could it? He quickly removed a reference book and flipped through it, and then went back through his copied version of Tokinson’s logbook, reading through the various travels and missions he’d been sent on, thumbing through tome after tome until he came upon an entry. His hand clenched around the glowing crystal, feeling it dig into his palm and the power bleed out between his fingers. Even as he did so, one of the answering pulses seemed to change once again, while the other two remained as they were, barely above a level of background disturbance. Balandar sealed the crystal again in it’s box, tripled the enchantments over it, and set out for Serpent’s Hold. He needed to talk to Commander Foxx, and he needed to do so immediately.

The night air was balmy and sticky in Trinsic this time of year, being so close to the jungle. With the watch doubled after the incident yesterday, most infiltrators would be completely deterred and steer entirely clear of the city, but this particular infiltrator saw it as a clear opportunity. Slipping into the water with a deep breath, they pierced through the water crisply with swift strokes and broke the surface past the walls quietly, taking their time to slink out of the water, letting it drip slowly and quietly into the grass, and waiting at the spot under the bridge for the patrol to pass. As they did, the figure slipped silently past, heading west from the river and sticking to what shadows the clouds passing over the moons provided. Sticking close to the wall, the figure seemed to almost meld into the crevices as another patrol passed, oblivious to the hidden form mere feet from their patrol path. Once more, they started forward…finally entering the central building next to the park.

Reaching a hand into a pocket, the figure quietly unfolds a set of lockpicks and kneels next to the door of the Royal Surveyor’s office, picking the lock with a few discreet clicking noises before slipping into the room and locking it behind. Inside the Surveyor’s office, the figure immediately sets to work drawing out a dozen or so volumes and maps. The original information leading to the HMS Fury; An ancient census taken from scores of years ago; A topographical map dating back to before Lord British’s reign; Information about Orc Raids against Cove when it was first being established; The recent survey of the collapsed portion of the rediscovered Paws; a concise history of the Royal Brittanian Guard; A book of notes from Nystul; and a tome detailing the patterns and behaviors of wild spawning moongates. This strange and peculiarly eclectic collection all undergo equal scrutiny from the figure, before they are gathered up and carried to the door.

Unlocking and opening it and relocking it behind themselves, they quietly move towards the park through the south archway, wary of any onlookers. Removing a small folded piece of canvas, the tomes and scrolls are wrapped inside the canvas and tied, before the figure removes a dagger and stabs small holes throughout it, and eyes the water nearby. A slight grin plays along their face as they throw the heavy bag into the water, and quickly dashing through the park and out the opposite side as they make their way out of the city. The bag sinks, leaving trails of air bubbles as the ink inside the books and scrolls runs, coloring the sunken canvas momentarily before dissipating in the water and disappearing as it sinks to a deeper part of the small pond. A single nearby guard moves to the park and looks into the water, but only shrugs and returns to his patrol. Those blasted giant Tokunese fish they imported with that trade deal with the Empress sure were noisy things…

EM – Healer’s Guild Admission Quest

October 03, 2011 By: Lord Gareth Category: Ethereal Void Imperium

Healer’s Guild Admission Quest, Vesper Healers – Monday October 02, 2011 By Lord Gareth

Healers Guild Admission Quest at the Vesper's Healer October 02 2011

Townships gathered for the first Healer’s Guild Admission Quest at the Vesper’s Healers building tonight. They were given the task of submitting one remedy to common maladies with detailed information on its history, possible methods of transmission, signs and symptoms, treatment and preventative measures.

With the submission they would also need to include the ingredients necessary to treat the Malady. The Entries from tonight were Creative and Amazing! Everyone did a wonderful job on them and we were lucky enough to receive some of the entries from Kijustsu Anei Village, Dragons Watch City, Moria Village and Zedland City and have included them below.
[Discussion Thread]

Granite Soremine
Britannian Tower Healer, Kijustsu Anei Village

Granite Soremine is a common complaint among many workers in the Mining field, and something nearly every Cave Miner experiences during their career at one point in time or another. The first Major outbreaks were reported by Mining Cooperative Officials from the City of Cove during the Population Explosion of 319. Granite Soremine is named after the Granite Stone which was extracted in record amounts from the Cove Mountains to keep up with high demands for building construction across the lands. The infection has been connected with mild to long term exposure and or short term exposure in mines with High concentrations of the stone.

Granite Soremine is commonly misdiagnosed because of its initial symptoms present as a simple Muscle Stain. Around day three you will begin to experience moderate Stiffness in one or more of the following areas; Hands, Forearms, Feet, Knees, and or Belly accompanied by mild itching and skin pigmentation change. With many different types of Stone Granite it may present in one of the following shades:

Iron
Dull Copper
Shadow
Copper
Bronze
Gold

Shades of Agapite, Verite and Valorite have been reported on very rare occasions. The skin pigment changes are due to the Granite Stone Dust that has infiltrated the deepest levels of your skin. Treating Granite Soremine is pain free and easy with Sulphurous Ash, Obsidian, and Spider Carapace.

Sprinkle crumbled up Sulphurous Ash to the infected area. Once a tingling sensation is felt immediately place Obsidian on top to prevent skin burn and blisters. The Obsidian will endure high levels of heat generated from the Sulphurous Ash as it begins to mix and eradicate the dust fragments within the skin. To keep the Obsidian in place for the next seven days place a Spider Carapace on top of the Obsidian and secure it by wrapping long bandages around it.

Curing Granite Soremine may be pain free and simple but the treatment is not commonly administered. With most cases reported by miners in the field they are unable to fulfill the required Seven Days of bed rest that is required with treatment. Granite Soremine left untreated is not life threatening but will result in permanent full body skin pigmentation changes.

(JTPS)
Mayor Nanoc, Dragons Watch City

Jumping Toad of Papua Syndrome (JTPS) was discovered with the finding of the Lost Lands.  It was easily spread to explorers from the Giant spotted toads in the swamp lands of Papua. The first symptom that is displayed is the jumping reflex to loud noises.  It has been said some men are able to jump 15 feet in an up and forward movement. Then patients are noted to begin screaming, flailing arms. The third and most dangerous sign of Jumping Frog of Papua Syndrome is obeying commands in a reflexive, involuntary manner all while constantly ribbiting. An example would be if told to strike down a township citizen with a dull butter knife they would do so without question.

The cure for Jumping Frog of Papua Syndrome is difficult to obtain. One must go about castrating the Giant Toads and obtaining 15 Toxic Venom Sacs. The Venom Sacs are then mashed and blended with 2 ginger roots. Mash for 12 hours using a pestle and mortar then apply to the patients underarms and behind the knees. Wrap with warm cloths changing it once every 3 days.  The patient will start asking for frog legs for his meal, but under no circumstances are they to be given any frog meat or amphibian for that matter.

Frenzied Ostard Fever
Guildmistress of ViPs Sundina, Moria Village

A viscous disease called frenzied ostard fever has erupted throughout the t2a lands. It is believed that the disease was caused by a mutated parasite that made its way onto rats and rabbits which were eaten by the frenzied ostards. This fever is highly contagious and being anywhere near the ostards is a huge risk. Many tamers have been affected by this ruthless disease. All humans are highly susceptible to the disease and are advised to avoid t2a at all cost.

The frenzied ostard fever forces the victims to hallucinate and make their way toward a crowd of people, it also forces them to become aggressive where they can no longer control their body movement.

Remedy:
Find some mandrake root, ginseng and garlic, grind it up and create a strength potion, a heal potion and a cure potion. Next, cut up some enchanted apples and squeeze the juices all over the victims chest. Next, place a clean white cloth on the chest but make sure it is heated first. Lastly, damp a white cloth and place it over the victims forehead. The victim should start feeling better within 24 hours of following the remedy in the right order.

Minoc Pox
Jess the Wench, PaxOku City

This malady is sometimes seen in Winter among miners and beasts of burden which accompany them into the depths to dig the various metal ores. It is believed to be caused from inhaling certain ancient impure airs trapped beneath the rocks in ages forgotten.

Symptoms:
Symptoms include fever and tremors accompanied by an odd, sparkling, metallic-looking rash about the torso and extremities.

Cure:
It is cured by a simple healer’s spell, but among the miners there is a folk remedy to prevent the malady before it is even contracted: In a small pot of boiling water, eight garlic cloves and a good dose of honey are stirred
together with a small lump of refined valorite.

The mixture is boiled for a few minutes and then allowed to sit for an hour, at which time it is strained and drunk by the miners (or poured over their beasts’ food) before descending into the mines. Rarely, Minoc Pox has been known to leave  some scarring behind. In such cases the victim is instructed to bask in the glow of a blue moongate overnight, and all traces of the scarring will fade.

NarJuo Rash
Lord Gareth, Zedland City

Scaly and Crusted Green skin are signs of the NarJuo rash. This Rash is typically caught by those whom have recently visited the Trinsic area. NarJuno is caused by left over undying flesh particles from the Juo’Nar attacks upon Trinsic in 315. If left untreated the rash will begin to spread throughout your Chest area. Trinsic Locals believe the rash to be the sign of Juo’Nars attempt to return through the infected hosts body but this is not the case, it is just a simple rash that lasts for a few weeks unless treated.

Curing of the NarJuo Rash is a rather smelly process but a quick one. You will need undying flesh and lantern oil, soak the undying flesh in Lantern oil over night. Use the undying flesh which should have soaked up all the oil and rub it on the infected area. The fluids from the flesh mixed with the oil will allow it to remain left on the skin. There are no known side affects for this treatment and it should clear up within three to five days.

Lurker Fish Disease
Deputy Mayor Phoenix, Dragons Watch City

Discovered two years ago when the Lurkerfish was first found in the dark waters of the dungeons. Just touching the skin of this fish can give a citizen the disease. The signs and symptoms of Lurkerfish disease is easily noticed though the cure is unknown.

Alchemist and healers are trying to make a breakthrough. Here is what to look for if you think you or a loved one might have gotten this disease from fishing, the handling of, or eating the Lurkerfish.

1. A fish mouth appearance.
2. Inability to frown, smile or suck.

An alchemist can grind together a mixture of 10 delicate scales found from the palliative waters surrounding Moonglow, and 2 jars of elderberry honey found only in the city of Vesper. One spoonful of this soothing mixture is to be taken every morning and evening. It has been shown to loosen the facial muscles so that the patient can smile and is able to eat. This mixture must be taken for the rest of ones life as research is still be done on the cure.

Ratman Rabies
Guildmaster of ViPs Demon Slayer, Moria Village

It has recently been discovered that certain ratmen carry a highly lethal form of rabies with each bite. Some of these ratmen were scratched or bit by rotting corpses so should an infected ratman bite you, you will quickly be overwhelmed with this advanced form of rabies. Untreated, the disease will literally turn you into the walking dead. Your skin will become very dry and turning a dark color, you will develop spots all over your body. You will soon feel intense pain shoot throughout your body as you barely know if you are still alive or not. Finally, your pupils disappear and your eyes become completely white. You become extremely aggressive toward everyone and now feel that you must kill and eat anything around you. Your body feels like it is on fire unless you are eating raw flesh. It really is a rather disgusting disease.

Remedy:
Luckily, there is a cure to this nasty disease. The best way is to avoid ratmen completely. However, should you come into contact and start feeling your skin become very dry, you will only have 4 or maybe 5 hours to act. Find a silver sapling tree and pluck a single seed from it, grind up the seed finely along with some ginger, mix these two ingredients together with some water and then grind half a nightshade into the mix, quickly drink this foul tasting concoction. Next, chug down three cure potions followed by two heal potions while chanting “vas an nox” Make sure to follow the remedy word for word or you will lose all sense of humanity.

Lightfingers Twitch
Dr Goodspeed, Kijustsu Anei Village

A common complaint among Archers in the Royal Guards from an allergic reaction to the dandruff found in the feathers of Harpies used to make arrows and bolts. Lightfingers twitch commonly occurs in the right Index finger and or thumb but does not present any physical signs of infection. Lightfingers Twitch is more of an annoyance than anything but moderate to mild infections will cause involuntary joint movement within the fingers thus greatly impairing an archers accuracy which can be deadly to those within their unit during combat.

Lightfingers Twitch is treatable by wrapping infected fingers in bandages that have been soaked for twenty-four hours in Fountain of Life water or Purification Machine Water.

Juka Speech Disorder
Deputy Mayor Phoenix, Dragons Watch City

A Speech Disorder that causes sudden changes in speech pattern, speech intonation and pronunciation so that the victim appears to be speaking Juka.  JSD (Juka Speech Disorder) results from severe blows to the head from golems, juka warriors and juka lords who reside in and around the town of Mistas in Ishenar. This disorder was first discovered when travel to this land was first made available through moongates approximately 10 years ago.

The symptom exhibited are the following:
Victim sounds like a Juka and is unable to communicate with friends and families.

A powerful potion aptly named “Tongue Twisted Weed” made from the three (3) Slith tongue one (1) Eye of the  Travesty, added to Four (4) ounces of Muculent. This mixture is drank 3 times daily for a period of 7 days.

At which time the victim is not to speak or attempt to use his/her voice. Food is limited to gruel obtained from the Hag or Inu the crone of Moonglow. Prevention is to always wear a helmet when traveling through Mistas.

Will there be a minimum healing skill for the healer’s quests?

Elder EM Dudley: First one, no 2nd one, it will be in the capacity of acting as a healer So yes. You won’t do very well if you can’t heal people.

Revenge is a dish best served with Pictures!   Love, Gareth

Morpheus Mardox: When will get to go to Fortunes Fire once again. I have yet to be able to make it, hoping madly to see the place in action!

Elder EM Dudley: We can likely do a session following an HoC in the future, perhaps on the 16th.

Each township will choose one house to build the best Haunted house and have a chance to win 50,000,000gold. Phoenix and I are working out the final details and will have it posted soon.

Elder EM Dudley: And win a Gareth slave for a month! How about that! You heard it here first folks! Win the Haunted House Contest and Gareth will be your slave for a month! Scrubbing floors! Stoking Forges! Tightening Looms! No job too big or too small!

Gareth: Elder EM Dudley and EM Drosselmeyer! You you heard it right here first! They will be judging! Woot!! Woot!!

Kijustsu Anei Village, Homare-Jima – By Angelica and Lord Gareth

Make your way to any farm within the lands for your chance to find a Jack ‘O Lantern to summon the Killer Pumpkin. To bring fourth the Killer Pumpkin Double Click the Jack ‘O Lantern and within moments you will come face to face with the Killer Pumpkin…dun dun dun. Sadly they are not much of a challenge, rather weak and easy to kill. Once you have defeated the Pumpkin the mask may appear as loot on the corpse but its not a guaranteed drop.

To increase your chance of spawning the monster you should camp one of the farms. Use pack horses to pick up the pumpkins don’t just throw them off to the side of you will be there all day!!!. Once the pack horse is full gate it off to another area of the world and kill it. If you have 30 Necromancy and 30 Spirit Speak then you can summon a horde minion to do it for you. If you lack the skill try to find rings, talismans or Necromancy books to increase your level.
