[News] The Hunt Is On

January 30, 2012 By: Faeryl Category: Atlantic News

The Hall of the Silver Serpent was buzzing with activity. The Knights had gathered at the request of Lady Amandine and were awaiting her presence when an unknown voice called out from the back of the Hall.

“The wolves of Britannia, assembled to hunt a bear…”

Our eyes turned to regard the stranger, and, as he strode swiftly across the Hall, he began to tell us of when he had killed his first bear. Having won the bear in a tournament, he had set it free so he could hunt and kill it. One could see the twisted glee in his eyes as he recounted the joy of seeing a predator’s eyes turn to eyes of fear. The topic abruptly changed as the man asked about Lady Amandine, telling us, with a hint of sarcasm, that it was “a pity her calling was to lead Knights….Instead of….Other things.” The man finally introduced himself as Sir Hethe Idem, from a new Order of Knights known as the Poor Fellowship of the Chamber of Virtue. He spoke of how this Fellowship was dedicated to maintaining unity in the realm, that it was their duty to lead the rest. When asked about the abduction of Yusef Ad-Din and Theresa, he denied having anything to do with it, stating that he would never resort to a tactic such as kidnapping. He then told us that the Fellowship is based in the Chamber of Virtue, and if we wished to experience true unity, worth and trust, then we may seek them out. “You will be hearing from us again… Good luck… Hunting bears…” With that last comment he departed.

Upon her arrival, Lady Amandine wasted no time in calling ten of her Knights to the stage. She declared that these individuals would be put up for special commendation for their dedication over the last year and a half and for going above and beyond in their duties as Knights. “I have nothing for them tonight, but soon there may be something special for them. You folks can return to your seats.”

Lady Amandine then told us that she had received word from the Guards of Yew that some bodies had been discovered and it was unclear if it should be treated as a crime or an animal stack. We were told the scene was in far western Yew, and we were to investigate and report back with our findings. With little more than rumours and a location, we set out.

After several minutes of searching, the first grisly scene was discovered. The mangled body of what had once been a man was lying under a tree to the north of the house, alongside a winter cloak. Inside was another body, this time a woman. A spear also lay off to the side. It wasn’t long before shouts could be heard of a blood trail heading south, and at the end could be found a monk’s robe and a peasant’s dress. There was talk of the robe possibly belonging to one of the monk’s at the winery, and so the investigation continued.

“Welcome to Ye Olde Winery.”

At the winery, the Knights were greeted by Father Simon. When asked about the bodies, the Father at first brushed it off as a random animal attack, however when told of the discovery of the monk’s robe, we were informed that one monk, Rieb Adre, had gone missing.  Father Simon mentioned that several months ago, Rieb had come to him and stayed for a time, praying and meditating, but he’d had a troubled soul. The Father insisted that Rieb was a good man, but that he had met a girl, and as that was not welcome, he had returned to his home with her. He told us that the girl’s name was Tarra Edels, and he believed that they were friends with the butcher in Minoc. With that new information we bid the Father farewell and went on our way.

At first the trail seemed to end in Minoc. There was nothing of importance to be found at the butcher’s and no real clues to be seen. The Knights searched for a while longer before a badly burned journal was discovered in a nearby building. The journal belonged to Rieb, and what little that was still legible spoke of how he’d met a girl in Yew, the daughter of a butcher. It mentioned how he’d resolved to tell her about his curse. It went on to say that now there are two, that her hunger is terrifying and that though he is her master, he is afraid of her and that animals would no longer sate her hunger. Many pages after were destroyed, but there was one more passage; it spoke of how she wanted children, wanted their cave full of dire bear cubs, and how he believed that she didn’t understand the danger.

Back in Yew, a ledger book was found in the butcher shop that contained notes written by Tarra Edels. The most interesting ones spoke of how she enjoyed eating raw meat and of a secret place she’d found to the east; a place full of catacombs and ancient chambers where you could hide something if you wanted to.

Those among us who resided in Yew were quick to direct the others to the Yew Crypts, the place Tarra had most likely been writing about. The crypts seemed quiet at first, but we were quickly assaulted by various undead creatures as we travelled through the crypts, including: Ancient Shield Maidens, Ancient Dragon Kings, Ancient Stallions, Ancient Knights and Ancient Viziers. At the end of one of the many passages, a flight of crumbling stone stairs led to a chamber that contained the dire bear cubs. The Knights attacked without delay, but even being outnumbered, the bear cubs fought back viciously.

When the last cub had fallen, it was evident that the mother and father weren’t going to appear. After some deliberation, we headed back to Jhelom to report our findings to Lady Amandine as ordered.  She seemed surprised at the news that there had been cubs found, and happy that they had been dealt with. Though frustrating that the mother and father hadn’t been apprehended or killed, it was agreed that they’d appear and be dealt with soon enough now that their cubs were dead.

On a lighter note, many of our dedicated Knights received a well-earned promotion after the night’s mission. I’d like to extend my congratulations to those promoted and also remind everyone that you MUST be in attendance at roll call to receive merit towards a promotion.

In all, it was another successful mission; however, there always seems to be questions left unanswered. Sir Hethe Idem for example. What was the purpose of his visit to the Hall of the Silver Serpent, and what part will the Fellowship play in these dire times?  Or Rieb and Tarra, where were they as their cubs were slain?

[EM News] Hunting the Bear, Part One – January 26th @9pm EST

January 25, 2012 By: Faeryl Category: Atlantic News

In the dark.

Ilseda stood at her window peering out into the moonlit forest. The house fought back the winter chill, but only barely. A fire once roared in the far end, however it had been reduced to dull warm coals through neglect.

The forest looked dark and foreboding and made her uneasy inside, he had been gone too long. The snow reflected the moonlight making the ground glow in an eery sort of manner reminiscent of grave stones.

Ilseda awaited her husband, he had gone for firewood hours ago and to check his traps. She was cold and hungry but the tug at her heart at his absence made both irrelevant.

Times were hard, especially in the outlying areas where merchants feared to go. The lands had begun to fragment into their townships and spheres of self interest. Such a thing left families in between the cities and those that lived in the outskirts wholly on their own and in peril.

The woods and dark places of the world had begun to fill with thieves, bandits and worse. Towns were dangerous and at times lawless, which made the places between them little more than Anarchy. Ilseda had begged her husband Traeu to shutter their small ranch outside of Yew and move to an area closer to the protection of the town guards.

“My family has lived on this land since my great great grandfather settled it, Ill not leave it because people in the cities cannot get along.” Traeu had growled at her, the issue bothered him greatly. He had been born on this land and Ilseda knew he aimed to die here if it ever came to that.

Ilseda was childless and had only her loneliness to comfort her in her husbands absence. She loved her husband, he was a good man. She had married young to a hard working and honest man. He had his faults but none were any more than petty annoyances. They lived a good life and were left alone for the most part.

The animals had been shut away for the winter and the snow lay thick over their fields.

“Where are you?” She muttered half to her self. Her worry grew with every moment. Her breath pasted the window with an ominous fog that she continuously wiped away with her sleeve.

Ilseda shivered and closed her eyes, the night had gotten far too late and the moon was high in the skies. The cold of the house had gotten between her skirts but there was no firewood to revive the fire. The wood was on the far end of the field and Traeu had taken the warm cloak with him.

“Surely he had time to check all his traps already.” She thought in her mind and wondered how long it would take her to run across the field and grab firewood herself. The cold bit at her and closing her eyes in exhaustion had only made it worse.

Outside she heard a low moan and slapping at the wall under the window. Ilseda screamed as the slapping and fumbling on the other side of the wall from her worked its way quickly up the wall to the window to reveal her husbands face… or most of it.

The visage pressed against the window leaving blood and carnage across the pane. Her husband screamed at her in a low guttural sort of howl that was not coherent. Then he was pulled away by something, something in the dark that contrasted totally against the white snow and left a bloody trail into the forest as it carried Traeu with it.

Ilseda stood motionless. Outside was certain death, inside only delayed it. Could she hide? Could she fight? Running was not an option.

Clawing at the door. Not innocent scratching of a dog wanting warmth. This was an aggressive massive form which now slammed itself into the door. Once. Twice. Then a terrible third as the door gave way and a rush of cold air flooded the house.

The doorway was far from empty, a blackened form with pink eyes stepped into the room. He was massive and walked on all fours, his claws seemed pearl white against the black fur. A dire bear, larger than anything she had ever seen.

The bear circled her in her own house, judging her reaction. She stood staring at it, she dared not run. She knew better. He moved with a sort of intelligence his eyes darting from her to around the house, looking for others? He stopped his circle opposite the doorway he had come from and at her back.

A second came, slightly smaller this one the female. A mated pair. The female bore signs of a fight, one she had won. A crimson sort of gore covered her maw and front flaws which left its mark on the floor of the ancient cabin.

Ilseda then remembered the spear, the hunting spear above the fireplace. She lunged for it, catching it enough to knock it from its pegs. Her grasp cut short by the male he then pinned her to the floor.

Ilseda looked over into the eyes of the female as she approached, the eyes… the eyes were not animal but intelligent, were they human?

Ilseda’s thoughts ran wild and her voice cracked as she wept into her own words.

“W… what are you? Please… Please let me go.” She looked into the eyes of the female begging for her life.

She had chosen the wrong of the pair to make her plea. Her last words chosen and spoken, Ilseda’s last sight was that of a bloody bear claw and a dark animistic smile.

[EM News] EM Tiberies Event, Friday 27 January 2012, 8pm Eastern

January 24, 2012 By: Faeryl Category: Atlantic News

There will be an EM Tiberies event, 8pm Eastern this Friday, 27 January 2012, at the West Britain Counselors’ Hall.

Barring the possibility of the global event content causing fighting by accident, or EM Bennu unexpectedly attacking us with bears or moose or something, this will be an RP-only denouement (wrap-up) event for the Professor’s Pride arc, and a lead-in to the next arc.

Professor Yusef Ad-Din will be discussing his and Theresa’s ordeal (filling in some details such as the specific sequence of events the night of the kidnapping, which I know people have been curious about), and delivering a lecture on the lore of the Virtugreel.

I anticipate this to last about an hour or so at most.

Lady Amandine

Sherry The Mouse Makes An Appearance

January 13, 2012 By: Kylie Kinslayer Category: Atlantic News

More than a few Atlantic citizens had already noticed the appearance of Crux Ansata Guards standing watch throughout the land. Rumors and speculation ran rampant as to why they had been called into action. More than a few of those included keeping our banks safe from a certain infamous thief. Those rumors according to Sherry would turn out to hold a certain amount of truth to them. In her travels she had ran across a man proclaiming to be the King of Thieves. The man went on to boast about having guards in his pocket. When Sherry reported this back to Lady Danica Amandine, Field Marshall for The Knights of the Crux Ansata, she immediately dispatched troops that could indeed be trusted.

Sherry, being a mouse of the people, wanted to stroll about town and check on everyone’s wellbeing. Our travels with her eventually led us to Trinsic where she discovered the town had been abandoned by its Army. The barracks were empty, the mess halls deserted. This caused enough concern for Sherry she felt she needed to report the activities to Lady Amandine immediately.

When word reached her ears, let’s just say she seemed less than pleased. Her troops were already spread thin, but you could tell by the intensity of her face she knew not to leave Trinsic unguarded. She had already left Magincia and Yew in the capable hands of their own militia but still she seemed to need more bodies to guard our land. During her thinking she indicated in the near future it may come down to US, the people of Atlantic to each pick ONE town to help defend.

Like things were not tense enough, and the forces already spread too thin, word of the destruction of Lord Blackthorn’s Castle began to swirl. Wanting to see the ruins with her own eyes, the fair Lady mounted up and everyone else quickly followed suit. Just a short walk from the Ilshenar Honor moongate, and a quick climb over the rockslide blocking the path everyone witnessed first hand the annihilation of what was once a towering, sprawling fortress. Bodies littered the ground, the stench of burnt plants and rotting flesh filled the air. Searching as best we could, no visible signs could be found to indicate who perpetrated such carnage.

Falling back across the rockslide to safety and away from the savages who seemed to be unscathed, Lady Amandine was visibly shaken and for the first time since I have know her, speechless. As the stark reality gripped her she laid out what is surely the best laid plan at this time. While she seeks the counsel of Simeon and Adamu, we are to remain vigilant and on guard. She urged all in attendance to concentrate on the cities as not a one of them should be allowed to fall.

Through all the events that unfolded, she seemed the most apprehensive when talk turned to her letting Sherry the Mouse know about the destruction of the Castle. Most everyone agreed Sherry would be rather disturbed by the news. One thing is certain, once word hits Sherry’s ears she will be scurrying about the land trying to get any piece of information she can, along with warning anyone in earshot. Be on the look out for our little friend as you go about your travels. January 12, 2012 By: Faeryl Category: Atlantic News

EM Tiberies event, Sunday January 15, 7pm Eastern Time.

Gather at the Counselors’ Hall in West Britain. I will create or designate a chat channel at that time.

You will help Salah Ad-Din to rescue his brother Yusef Ad-Din and Yusef’s lady Theresa from the evil order of Knights whom you encountered in the previous event.

This event will be almost all combat.

(Assuming of course that your suggestions about where they might be, from the other thread, are accurate! And if not, this will be a short event.)

It is a distinct possibility that Yusef or Theresa or both will not survive this event. You will have to be fast for them both to live.

[News] In The Spirit of Giving

December 19, 2011 By: Faeryl Category: Atlantic News

Earlier today, a not-so-small gathering of people were graced with the presence of Sugarcane, the Tree Guardian at the Giving Tree in Skara Brae. Speaking a greeting from both himself and tree, he told the crowd that the tree wished everyone to have one of her branches, for that is all she could give.

Remember to visit the Giving Tree frequently throughout the week, as Sugarcane may once again appear with a treat for the crowds!

On another note, the Sugarplum Fairy, sent by Santa,  has also been spotted asking citizens if they have been naughty or nice this year.

Be sure to keep an eye out for her during your travels!
