A – Z
* bank box: each character starts the game with
access to a bank box. This box is where you can store your items or
gold and anything else you wish to keep. The box holds 125 items. To
access your bank box go to any bank in game and say ‘Bank’ and it will open. Other
commands used at the bank are ‘Balance’ to give you a current balance,
‘Check’ if you wish to convert your gold to a check so it is able to be
carried in larger quantities, ‘Withdraw <amount eg> 200′ to take
200gps out of your bank.
* What is a binding, how do I change them?: A
binding is basically a ‘hotkey’ where a key/s is selected to ‘bind’ the
action to to initiate it. For example the default binding for
opening a backpack is the letter ‘I’ (for inventory), so hitting the
letter ‘i’ will open your backpack. Pre-set key bindings are found by
going to the menu bar, selecting Main Menu/User Settings/Bindings tab. You
may clear out some or all of the bindings (defaults) shown here by
clicking once on the ‘action’ and pressing <esc> to clear the
default bindings from the hotkeys. To set an action to a binding of your
choice, click on the action and press the keys you wish to use to operate
it.
* blessed: a blessed item is one that does not
require insurance to protect from loss. Any blessed item will remain on
your body if you die and will be in your backpack when you are
resurrected.
* How do I buy items from an npc?: To
buy items from a shopkeeper (known as an NPC ‘non player character’)
hold the <shift> key down, <right click> on the npc and select
‘buy’, a menu will appear and you can + the items you wish to buy.

instructor?: To ‘buy’ skill hold the <shift> key down and
<right click> on the instructor, a menu will appear saying ‘train
skill i.e. ‘train fencing’ etc. Click the skill you wish to get additional
training in and the instructor will tell you how much to pay. Hold
the shift key down and drag your pile of gold with your mouse to bring up
the quantity box, type in the amount and separate it from the gold
pile. Then drag this amount onto the head of the instructor and
release. He will take your gold and increase your skill to 40
points.
* compassion: one of the 8 virtues in Ultima
Online. The reward for following the path of this
Virtue is the ability to increase the amount of health another player
receives upon their resurrection, as long as you are the one that
resurrects them through the use of magic or bandages. Under normal
circumstances, players only have one point of health when they are
resurrected. With this ability, you can increase that amount up to 80% of
their maximum hit points based on the level, or step, of Compassion
you have attained.
*escorts: Around New Haven are various quest givers
called, ‘wandering mages’, ‘merchants’ ‘nobles’ ‘brides’ and
‘grooms’. Each of these will be titled ‘quest giver’ and will want
you to ‘escort’ them to various places in New Haven eg, ‘accompany me to
the New Haven Inn’. By accepting the quest, the quest giver will follow
behind you and once you arrive at the destination will give you and
additional 500gps for your effort, as well as giving you some compassion*
gains. For more information see escorting.
* floating hotbars: these are hotbars created by
right clicking a hotbar and selecting ‘new hotbar’. These hotbars may be
moved anywhere on your screen, turned vertical or horizontal and resized
from 1-12 boxes in length. To resize a floating hotbar place your cursor

character sheet) and macro icons (from main menu/macros) for one
left click access or assigning to a hotkey. To set a target on an item or
spell in a hotbar <right click> select target, then ‘self, cursor,
or current’. To clear an item or icon, again right click and ‘clear’ or
just place ‘over’ the existing icon.
* insurance: all items you wear or equip may
be insured against loss for the amount of 600 gps per item. To insure an
item in KR put it in your backpack, hold <shift> and right click
your avatar (yourself) on screen. A menu will open, scroll to ‘toggle item
insurance’ and click, you will get a target cursor to target the item
with. You may need to put your cursor back over the item to check that it
is insured. Do this for any item you wish to insure. Insuring will only
work the first time you die unless you have also set the insurance to
renew. To set the insurance to renew follow the steps as above only select
‘auto renew inventory’, you will get a prompt to say you have elected to
reinsure items on death. This will cost you 600gps per item per death but
will automatically reinsure your items.
* LRC (lower reagent cost): armor or items that
have this modification give a % reduction in how many mage/necro/ reagents
or tithing gold you need to ‘spend’ to cast spells. It can go to a maximum
of 100% so that spells are nil cost if you have the right suits/items.
* mage weapon: is a weapon that
gives a minus to mage skill (ie -10, -29 etc) but allows a mage to use the
weapon as if the user had that weapon skill. It is mainly used for
training purposes to reduce mage skill thereby giving more gains due to
the reduction in skill and being able to cast lower level spells.
* mana: is what is used to cast spells, and is
gained by your intelligence stat, ie the more intelligence you have the
larger your mana pool.
* moongate: numerous moongates are located in
each facet and are how you may travel to the rest of Britannia. Walking
into a moongate will show you a menu. As a young* player you
will not be able to travel to the facet of Felucca, as this is where,
among other things, player v player combat takes place. You will be
able to travel to other places in Trammel, Malas and Ilshenar.
*NPC’s: are what most people call all the ‘in game’
Non-Player Characters generated by the system. In other words those
characters inside the shops who you may buy items from, wandering healers,
quest givers, trainers and any human type character who is not a ‘real’
player.
* object handles :a
name bar of people, corpses and objects/items with a close button, right clicking on this
bar will bring up any menu a npc may have or dble clicking it will open a
corpse. To view object handles press <ctrl><shift> this is
also handy for finding bodies.
* patch screen: this is the first screen that opens
when you log into UO. It will give details of any patch or publish
that is entered into the game by the developers to advise you of changes
to game play or ‘fixes’. It will also advise of anything that may be
causing a problem or to be aware of that may have been reported but not
fixed. When updates are made the progress of the patch as it installs on
your machine will be viewable here.
* pvm: player versus monster
* pvp: player versus player
* How do I accept quests and see what
quests I have accepted?: To Accept a quest double left click an npc that
has ‘quest giver’ in his/her title on mouse over, a menu will open for you
to read, select ‘accept’. To view what quests you have accepted go to the
menu bar, select Quest Menu, a window will open up listing your current
quests, you may cancel quests in this same window.
* reagent: spell casting ‘ fuel’ to cast spells with, different
spells take different reagents to cast.
mage = black pearl, bloodmoss, ginseng, garlic, mandrake root,
nightshade, spiders silk and sulfurous ash.
necromancer = batwing, daemon blood, grave dust, nox crystal
and pig iron.
*recall/recalling: this term is used for movement
between locations by using a spell (either a recall mage spell/scroll, or
paladin sacred journey spell) To recall you need to have the
skill/scroll/reagents or tithing points to activate it, and of course a
marked rune with the location you wish to travel to marked on it.
* rune: is an item which has a location marked on
it that you may use to ‘move’ from place to place with the use of spells,
either the ‘recall’ mage spell or scroll, or the ‘sacred journey’ paladin
spell. Casting the spell and targeting a rune will take you to the
location marked on that rune. Mages may ‘mark’ runes with another spell.
* runebook: is
a book that you may place marked runes in to various locations, a marked
rune book is a book containing runes already marked for various places,
eg: the ‘towns in trammel’ or ‘dungeons in trammel’. Runebooks are
only available from other players who have the inscription skill, and are
sold off player run vendors*.
* rune library: is a player house that contains
runebooks available for all players to use. Rune
Libraries are great for new players as they have ‘marked’ locations for
lots of dungeons and commonly used hunting spots.
* How do I sell items to an npc? : To sell
items to a shopkeeper (known as an NPC ‘non player character’) hold
the <shift> key down, <right click> on the npc and select
‘sell’, a menu will appear and you can + the items you wish to sell.
* How do I separate stacks of gold or an
item stack?: To separate stacks, hold the shift key down and drag
with your mouse to bring up the quantity box, type in the amount you want
and separate it from stack.
* shard: a shard is the term used for
the various servers available to play on (it is actually one of the pieces of the Shattered Gem of
Immortality in Ultima Lore and each shard contains a full replica of Britannia, only with different laws, peoples and such). There are currently 18
shards and you may have characters on each if you wish (Siege
Perilous & Mugen only allow 1 character per account). There is also a
shard for the TEST CENTER , usually called TC1 with the current
publish number displayed. The Test Center is where you can go and
create characters and experiment with templates, housing, crafting
etc. The test center allows you to create a character with maximum
skills/stats by just ‘asking’ for them, which may be changed at any time
while you experiment. It provides access to large quantities of
resources/artifacts/gift tokens etc so you may view new items or include
them in suits for experimentation Any character created on here is not a
permanent character and will be deleted each time the TC1 resets for
another publish/testing patch. This is the ONLY shard you may place
another house on if you have house on your play shard. Houses on the
Test Center do NOT put your ‘real house’ into condemn mode. They are
used mainly for those wishing to experiment with house design.
* spell channeling: any weapon or
shield with a spell channeling modification, means that they maybe
equipped while casting spells instead of them falling into your backpack
upon casting. Spell channeling items with no minus (-) to casting are more
valuable than those with a minus, however, this is not always a negative
depending on the character using the item.
* How do I talk?: There are two ways to ‘talk’ in game.
The KR default
chat where to speak you type <enter> type your text here
<enter> or if you find ‘enter’ to talk difficult you may wish to
change this in your (Menu Bar) Main Menu/User Settings/Interface Tab and
put an ‘x’ in Legacy Chat Mode and select ‘yes’ to legacy bindings. This will mean you can just
type your text and press <enter> to
talk.
* template: a template is the term used for the
skill ‘make up’ of your character. Each character has 700 skill
points which you may make up by using whatever skills you
like. Everyone’s character has their own template choices, however,
there are some basic type templates generally more common such as a ‘mage
template’, ‘warrior template’, ‘thief template’ ‘crafter or mule
template’ etc. For template ideas it is good to view the profession forums
where you can get ideas of effective templates to put together. So if you
are interested in a good ‘fishing’ template ie what skills should you put
on, what complimentary skills may be used etc, the people who are
experienced will generally help you out by giving you tips. You may
also ask questions of those who have played the type of character you
think you may like to create and gain information on the ‘best’ way to
train etc. Reading these forums can save you a large amount of time
when you are new to UO and want to make the most of your new character.
* tithe, tithing: this is the term used by the
paladin class to donate gold to a shrine (ankh) as a sign of devotion to
the paladin class. To cast any chivalry spell costs 10gps of tithing
gold. To tithe gold left click on the ankh, to
place it in the target bar, right click on the bar and the menu appears,
select ‘Tithe Gold’ and then toggle the arrows to the amount you wish to
tithe.
* vendors: are available to players to position in
their houses and act as sales people for them to sell all manner of goods
to other players. You may also ‘rent’ a vendor spot from another player if
you wish to sell wares but do not have a good location or house. To buy
something off a vendor double click it, and right click on the item you
wish to buy. You may also say ‘vendor buy’ to get a target cursor.
* virtues: there are 8 virtues in UO.
Following the path of these virtues allows you to obtain some helpful
additional abilities. For more info see the Virtue
System.
*young: if this is your first time playing Ultima
Online, or it is a brand new account, all your characters will be marked
as [young] when they are created. As stated ‘young’ players cannot
travel to Felucca facet, as a young player you will also not be able to
select Siege Perilous or Mugen Shards unless the young player status is
revoked. Being young means that you cannot be attacked by monsters
or players unless you attack first, or they form part of a quest.
You are considered ‘young’ as long as you have not played more than 40
game hours and your characters have no more than 450 total skill points.
While under the ‘protection’ of having young status it is a good move to
take the opportunity to wander around the world, dungeons and towns to get
familiar with where things are for future reference. You may elect to lose
your ‘young’ status at any time by stating with any character: “I
renounce my young player status”
